I actually surprised when I read an article this morning, “World Happiness Report,” released Monday has ranked the Netherlands as the fourth happiest nation in the world. It’s an amazing achievement. How come Dutch Nation becomes happy when they are live in a low-lying country, with about 25% of its area and 21% of its population located below sea level? Let’s find out!
Based on Wikipedia, The Netherlands is a country with 50% of its land lying less than one meter above sea level. Its name literally means “(The) Low Countries” or “Low Country”. Most of the areas below sea level are man-made, caused by centuries of extensive and poorly controlled peat extraction, lowering the surface by several meters. Even in flooded areas peat extraction continued through turf dredging. As from the late 16th century land reclamation started and large polder areas are now preserved through elaborate drainage systems with dikes, canals and pumping stations. Much of the Netherlands is formed by the estuary of three important European rivers, which together with their distributaries form the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta. Most of the country is very flat, with the exception of foothills in the far southeast and several low-hill ranges in the central parts.
So, again, Can you imagine the Dutch nation live happily under the sea level? Yes you can. Dutch nation is a creative nation, they do not make the restrictions as obstacles to live happily. They do think how they could make this country a comfortable place to live. The more restrictions they have, more creative they are. Dutch nation think about all the creativity and possibility to make they live better under the sea. They are living harmony with flood. So now, I really understand why the Netherlands become the fourth happiest nation in the world. They really deserve to get it.
